Ranieri sacked by Leicester just 298 days after winning the title

Reactions are coming in in swarms after the sacking of Claudio Ranieri last night, just 9 months after winning the Premier League.

The Italian was said to have had his fate sealed after the loss to Sevilla in the Champions League, and sources believe that some of the players were summoned to meet the chairman after the game. However, caretaker boss Craig Shakespeare believes that Ranieri had never lost the dressing room, but the build-up of frustration after a series of losses was what led to the manager’s sacking. The Champions are currently sitting at 17th in the Premier League table.

Jose Mourinho has launched an attack on the Leicester players calling them ‘selfish’ after suffering a similar fate with his own team Chelsea last season after they went from Premier League Champions to 10th place. However, Mourinho stated that his sacking by Chelsea was ‘peanuts’ compared to that of the Leicester manager.

Ranieri guided the team to the Premier League title despite being rated at 5,000-1 at the beginning of the season. Against all the odds, the Italian led the team to success, but this season has been a completely different story. After being knocked out of the FA Cup by League One Millwall, facing defeat in the Champions League against Sevilla and having a record of just 5 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses so far this season, many are not so shocked about the sacking.

However, the likes of pundit Gary Linekar believe that the sacking is ‘inexplicable to a lot of football fans who love the game.” A lot of people believe that Leicester’s magic last season should’ve given Ranieri a lot more time than he was given to rebuild the club.
